The Emergency First Aid for Sport (RQF) qualification is for those who are emergency first aiders in a sporting environment, for example, teachers and sports coaches.
The qualification naturally meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. However, additional modules are related to head and other injuries and safeguarding while providing first aid to young people.
A primary concern within the sport is the return to play after an injury or incident, decisions teachers and coaches must make in the absence of medical expertise. The First Aid course explains how to assess a casualty to inform return-to-play decisions, including understanding the criteria of SALTAPS and how it informs return-to-play decisions; NGB policies for suspected head injuries concerning return-to-play decisions, e.g., Headcase.
Upon completion of the course, candidates will understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider and be able to identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider in a sports environment by knowing the principles of effective casualty communication.
The participants will identify the need for consent to provide first aid, including why consent should be obtained from the patient, and explain how a Sports first aider can safeguard children and others at risk while administering first aid.
