The HSE announce the changes for first aid in the workplace
Over the past few months we've been contacting
businesses about the Health &
Safety Executive's (HSE) changes to the guidance for first aid in the workplace
regulations (new guidance started 1 October 2009).
The HSE announcement of
the guidance on the new first aid needs assessment to determine first aid
coverage in the workplace is summarised as follows:
There are
now only two levels of risk for businesses: a low risk and a higher risk band
There is
now a greater emphasis on taking into account individual aspects of the
workplace when determining the level of first aid coverage. Employers need to consider:
workplace
hazards and risks
the size
of the organisation
the
organisation's history of accidents and illnesses
the
nature and distribution of the workforce
the
remoteness of the site from emergency medical services
the needs
of travelling, remote and lone workers
employees
working on shared or multi-occupied sites
annual
leave and other absences of first aiders and appointed persons
With the
introduction of the new role of an the guidance recommends that smaller low
risk workplaces should have a trained first aider where in the past it was
recommended they just needed an appointed person
