First Aid for Dental Professionals

Medical Emergencies & Resuscitation for Dental Professionals

The Resuscitation Council (UK) recommends that: "Staff should undergo regular training in the management of medical emergencies to a level appropriate to their expected clinical responsibilities." 'Standards for Clinical Practice and Training for Dental Practitioners and Dental Care Professionals in Dental Practice' were issued by the Resuscitation Council UK in July 2006.

First Aid Academy offers both 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) courses and refresher courses for dental surgeries. Our EFAW courses can be delivered at your venue for a group of up to 12 people.

Refresher courses (2 hours) package is delivered in your practice and is aimed at all Dental Practitioners and Dental Care Professionals. The course content can be tailored to suit your particular requirements. However it usually includes dealing with collapse, airway management, CPR, choking and common medical emergencies.

The guidance states; Medical emergencies can happen at any time in dental practice.  If you employ, manage or lead a team, you should make sure that:

  • There are arrangements for at least two people available to deal with medical emergencies when treatment is planned to take place.

  • All members of staff, not just the registered team members, know their role if a patient collapses or there is another kind of medical emergency.

  • All members of staff who might be involved in dealing with a medical emergency are trained and prepared to deal with such an emergency at any time, and practise together regularly in a simulated emergency so they know exactly what to do.

The guidance also states;

  • All clinical areas should have immediate access to an automated external defibrillator (AED)

First Aid Academy can delivery AED devices and training courses for your practice.

First Aid training can form part of your CPD.
