paediatricWhich First Aid course do I or my staff need?
The revision in First Aid legislation came into effect on October 1st 2009. Since the previous revision the average UK workplace has changed dramatically. Today, workplaces generally are low risk and have immediate access to the emergency services via mobile phones. Under the new revision the traditional 4-day First Aid at Work course is no longer seen as appropriate for all employers. To summarise simply there are now two levels of first aid accreditation:

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) for those employees in low risk workplaces e.g. offices, shops and call centres. This is a 6 hour (1-day) award
First Aid at Work
(FAW)
for more remote or hazardous environments e.g. light industry, construction, food processing. This is an 18-hour (3-day) award, reduced from the previous 24-hour course length.

Additionally all employers are 'highly recommended', by the Health and Safety Executive, to give their staff responsible for first aid an annual 3-hour refresher training.

How does the employer know which course their staff need?
Employers are required to undertake a hazard assessment of the workplace to decide which course to take.
First Aid Academy is happy to provide you with a FREE hazard assessment for your workplace.
Just give us a call on 0844 3571 426. As part of your hazard assessment the Academy may recommend that your staff undertake one of our environment specific first aid training courses because of legislation relating to your work sector or specific environments e.g. Outdoor, Sports, Paediatric, Security or Care sector specific first aid training.

Our 0844 number costs just 5p per minute from landlines.

Our strength is in our trainers who follow a nationally approved programme to deliver fun, interactive and relevant training for specific groups of workers. All our trainers are fully CRB checked and hold up to date disclosures.

logos_itc_reflect_09ITC First Aid is an Awarding Body with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in England and Wales and Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) in Scotland. The Academy is an approved Provider for ITC First Aid, this allows The Academy to deliver a range of nationally accredited first aid courses. ITC (Immediate Temporary Care) has been approved and registered with the HSE since the early 1990's. ITC certificates the First Aid Academy training courses and supports the rigorous monitoring of our trainers to enable us to work to the highest standards. As the educational sector is changing between now and late 2010, the National Qualification Framework (NQF) is ending and the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) is coming online. Over the next few months ITC First Aid is working toward Awarding Organisation status which will allow First Aid Academy, as one of its approved providers, to deliver accredited courses from the new QCF in the future in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

ITC First Aid has been responsible for entering the new Emergency First Aid at Work qualification onto the NQF, this follows the work they have already done to develop and resource Sports First Aid, Outdoor First Aid and Paediatric First Aid courses which are now on the framework.

First Aid Academy works with the ITC trainer network to support the development of new first aid trainers, running the first aid trainers course.

From July 5th we are happy to announce the formation of a training partnership between First Aid Academy and Adventure First Aid. Adventure First Aid is an ITC First Aid Provider based in Devon. Guy Risdon has been running Adventure First Aid for eight years and is now taking a sabbatical to become a Paramedic. Guy was looking for someone to manage Adventure First Aid and since he and Cory Jones, First Aid Academy Training Director, have worked together for the past few years it was a logical partnership to make.

For clients of First Aid Academy there is now even more choice for venues and dates for courses, as well as bring into the network some new trainers with new skills, making your courses even better.

For clients of Adventure First Aid the above is true, however as First Aid Academy will be dealing the managing of bookings for courses. There will be an improving office and admin process including an office phone answered 9-5 Monday to Friday, option to pay for courses online and much more.

Over July the office systems of both companies will be synchronized. if you spot and glitches on our documents or websites, please let us know.

For any more information give our main office a call on 0844 3571 426.

Tricky bricky.....first aider to the rescue

Groundwork Pennine Lancashire:  Outdoor First Aid course 24-25 April 2010

Liz Hinchliffe, Team Leader of Groundwork Pennine Lancashire approached First Aid Academy to request a last minute booking for an Outdoor First Aid training course due to the sudden and unexpected cancellation by their current providers.  First Aid Academy were delighted to be of assistance and the following feedback was received from Liz on behalf of the course participants.

'I'm writing to say thank you for the excellent first aid course you delivered at the Haslingden Sports Centre last weekend.  I've received very positive reports from attendees of the course who were thoroughly impressed.  Thanks also to the trainer who the attendees really warmed to.  Also one of the group had to practice his skills this week on a man who had been 'bricked' on the head on the tow path.  The newly trained first aider, administered first aid, patched him up and took him to the hospital.  The hospital commented on what great skiils he had.

We will definitely bear you in mind for future courses.'

'Thanks again and I will certainly recommend you to our partners and other Groundwork Trusts.'
